Visit to Benjamin William Mkapo School, Moshi

Project visit at Benjamin William Mkapo School

As the whole reason with this challenge event was to raise money for kids in the Kilimanjaro region, we were all very excited to go on a project visit at one of Childreach's schools. When we arrived there, the kids greeted us with singing a welcome song. We were surprised and moved by this as we didnt expect so many kids to be there. We got off and walked with the kids to the school, one in each hand and the rest just trying to get close to us.
When we got to the school we got our second surprise; just as many more kids were waiting for us, this lot a bit younger. They started singing too and they were just as excited to see us. It was quite clear that these kids were a happy bunch and that warmed my heart. We were soon to find out why..

This little girl constantly came up to me, very happy and cheerful

The new toilets Childreach had made for the kids, many more than before and a lot cleaner and hygienic.

The garden, they grow spinach and other greens which are used when cooking for the kids.

The kids also get involved in the whole process and thereby they learn to do the basics of farming. They also had a new water pump, which one might think is normal, but that is not the case. We were also shown the new painted class rooms where the children have pictures of plants, the human body and other educational things. We are shown the new kitchen too, where the kitchen lady tells us that with the new stoves they dont need as much energy and its a lot less smoke so her eyes arent running anymore. It looks very clean and she looks very happy and proud when showing us her working area.
We start playing football and interact with the kids, and the girls are drawn to me very quickly. They touch my hair and want to talk, they tell me about their dreams and hopes for the future. Two of the girls get to me, they want to become pilots and see the world. How is that for aspiration! They also tell me that they enjoy going to school and that they have a nice school with good teachers. This makes me very warm inside my heart, as this is also not an ordinary thing.
From what I understood, every school has a Board, and depending on what decisions the Board makes, the school either develop or dont. This school has a great Board that welcome Childreach and its efforts which makes the big difference for the children in this school. They have also set up incentives for both kids and parents so everyone benefits from letting the kids go to school, which isnt as straight forward as us westerners would think. The parents might think the kids are needed at home to work instead of going to school, but if they can bring home water from the school it might be just as well to send them there.
This was very important day for all of us and we were all proud to have helped to contribute to the projects that Childreach work with as they clearly make a difference for the kids. This was also very important for us to be able to report back to our sponsors.
